The arrival of fall signals the unofficial start of pumpkin beer season. While the seasonal style certainly isn't for everyone, a handful of creatively-crafted brews are worth a try this autumn.

Who:Schlafly Beer, The Saint Louis Brewery

Where:St. Louis, Missouri

Fermented in pounds of fresh pumpkin and filtered through a spiced infusion of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg, Schlafly's Pumpkin Ale answers the question: What if pumpkin pie was a liquid? What's more, at a generous 8 percent ABV, this well-balanced seasonal beer will have you in the fall spirit in no time.

Who:Flying Dog Brewery

Where: Frederick, Maryland

Flying Dog's The Fear Imperial Pumpkin Ale appropriately appears darker than most pumpkin brews and packs quite the punch at 9 percent ABV. With a whopping 300 pounds of pumpkin added per every 50 barrels, this beer isn't your average seasonal pumpkin ale. At 45 IBU, it's also sure to be a hit with fans of hoppier beers.

Who:Alewerks Brewing Company

Where: Williamsburg, Virginia

Inspired by Brewmaster Geoff Logan's mother's pumpkin pie recipe, Alewerks Pumpkin Ale is essentially pumpkin pie in a glass, boasting notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar and more. This naturally spiced amber ale also pairs wonderfully with stuffing and vanilla ice cream, making it the perfect Thanksgiving brew.

Who:Elysian Brewing Company

Where:Seattle, Washington

One sip of Elysian Brewing's Punkuccino Coffee Pumpkin Ale and you'll be hooked. This beer is made with Stumptown coffee, cinnamon and nutmeg and receives at least three pumpkin additions throughout the brewing process.

Elysian Brewing is passionate about its pumpkin beers and that love comes through in the final product, or products in this case. In addition to Punkuccino, the Seattle craft beer institution concocted one of the world's first imperial pumpkin ales in The Great Pumpkin, an incredibly drinkable pumpkin ale in Night Owl (brewed with over seven pounds of pumpkin per barrel) and a pumpkin Schwarzbier dubbed Dark Knife (new for this season). You'll want to try them all before fall's up.

Who:Southern Tier Brewing Company

Where: Lakewood, New York

Don't wait until Halloween to enjoy Southern Tier's Pumking Imperial Ale. The aroma alone-pumpkin (obviously), pie spices, pie crust, vanilla and roasted pecans-is enough to win you over. However, after one sip you'll likely be hooked and wishing this beer was around year-round.

Who:Dogfish Head Brewery

Where: Milton, Delaware

This full-bodied brown ale debuted over two decades ago and wins you over with hints of pumpkin, brown sugar and spices. It won the top prize in the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Contest in Delaware and has been gaining momentum ever since. If you're lucky enough to still find it on the liquor store shelves at Thanksgiving, it pairs wonderfully with turkey, stuffing and dessert dumplings.

Where: Brooklyn, New York

If you love coffee and pumpkin together, Coney Island Brewing's Freaktoberfest Big Ol' Pumpkin Ale should be your go-to beer for autumn. This fall treat is brewed with Cafe Grumpy's specially selected espresso beans, which come through in the final product. However, your tongue will also welcome the sweet pumpkin finish.

Cigar City Brewing's Good Gourd Imperial Pumpkin Ale is one of the highest rated pumpkin beers on BeerAdvocate so you don't need to take my word for it. Brewed with cinnamon, allspice, cloves, nutmeg and vanilla, this special release is meant to be savored.

Who:New Belgium Brewing Company

Where: Fort Collins, Colorado

New Belgium Brewing Company's Voodoo Ranger Atomic Pumpkin Ale is incredibly bold and the fearlessness pays off. Brewed with Habanero, Aji and Del Arbol chili peppers and Saigon cinnamon, this one-of-a-kind fall brew has plenty of kick to keep you coming back for more.
