D23 Expo Takes Center Stage in Anaheim, California

      1/20
Disney fans and megastars from across the globe converged at the Anaheim Convention Center this weekend for the D23 Expo, "the ultimate Disney fan event." On days one and two, Hollywood royalty like Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer, Marvel heroes like Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, and Star Wars legends like Ewan McGregor and Billy Dee Williams took the stage to help deliver epic announcements about Disney+ programming and new Disney films.

But on Sunday, it was all about the parks as Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Bob Chapek ushered fans through a massive news drop of updates, announcements, and juicy details about what Disney fans have to look forward to at Disney parks, resorts, and on Disney Cruise Line in the coming years. Here are all the highlights.

'Avengers Campus' at Disney California Adventure and Disneyland Paris Turns Guests into Superheroes

      2/20
A new name and vague details were revealed on Thursday ahead of the expo about the Marvel-themed lands under construction in Anaheim and Paris. Now we know more: Earth needs more superheroes so the Avengers are establishing satellite Avengers Campuses throughout the world to provide bases for their recruitment initiative. Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure and Disneyland Paris will put guests side by side with their favorite Marvel heroes, including Iron Man, Black Widow, Star-Lord, Gamora, Groot, Black Panther and the Dora Milaje, Thor and Loki (you can bet there will be plenty of action and entertainment involving this cast of characters).

Guests can dine at the Pym Test Kitchen, which will no doubt involve some overgrown and shrunken food, and can explore the mysterious ruins of a California Sanctum. The land will also bring two new attractions (more on those next) in addition to DCA's existing Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! Phase One of the new land opens next year.

      Disney's First-Ever Spider-Man-Themed Attraction Will Be a Family-Friendly Web-Slinging Affair

      3/20
At the Worldwide Engineering Brigade (WEB), Peter Parker and his young genius inventor pals are working on technology that can give ordinary people superpowers. A new attraction puts guests in the seats to test-drive their latest invention, a web-slinger vehicle that allows anyone to sling webs just like their friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Also in the mix are Peter's Spider-Bots, which are cute-not-creepy mechanical spiders, which end up glitching and replicating out of control, so Peter needs to enlist the help of riders to web up all the bots running amok.

Phase Two of Avengers Campus Includes Plans for An Incredible Black Panther Attraction

      4/20
If you've always dreamed of flying in a Quinjet, you're in luck. An E-ticket attraction that sounds absolutely epic has guests suiting up and joining the Avengers for a trip to Wakanda that will involve a dramatic face-off with a major villain.

Disneyland Paris' Hotel New York Is Getting a Marvel-ous Makeover

      5/20
Disney's Hotel New York - The Art of Marvel will feature 300 curated works of Marvel art throughout the hotel as well as themed suites celebrating iconic superheroes like Spider-Man. Guests will also be able to meet their favorite characters at the hotel, which opens next summer.

A New Digital Tool Will Offer More Comprehensive Walt Disney World Vacation-Planning Support

      6/20
In late 2020 Disney will release a new digital offering that promises to take more of the work and stress out of planning a Walt Disney World vacation. Disney Genie will help guests create customized itineraries based on their interests-from princesses to thrill rides, pirates to food and wine. Tell Disney Genie what you want to do and it will create a customized plan. No need to book dining, FastPasses, and other experiences individually: Disney Genie will do it for you, allowing for the flexibility to change your plans and have Disney Genie help you reoptimize your day.

The New Star Wars Hotel Is a 'Space Cruise'

      7/20
On Thursday, we learned the name and a few details about the highly anticipated Star Wars hotel. Today, Imagineer Ann Morrow Johnson took the Expo stage to walk us through the two-day, two-night itinerary guests will experience aboard Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. Just like on a traditional cruise, guests will board the Halcyon, a glamorous starliner, along with all of the other passengers, and all will depart together. Every experience aboard the ship is part of one immersive Star Wars story that incorporates interaction with characters, crew, and other passengers throughout the experience.

The experience begins at check-in at the terminal. Guests enter a launch pod that blasts them into space. Once connected to the Halcyon, the doors will open and guests will emerge in the atrium. Cabins will offer constantly changings views into space from the windows. The ship will be teeming with Star Wars characters-some known, some unknown, and some feared. Like a regular cruise, the itinerary even features a port day, which will of course mean a visit to Black Spire Outpost on the planet of Batuu, otherwise known as Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney Hollywood Studios.

Onboard activities include facing off with a training remote while wielding a lightsaber, visiting working portions of the ship like the bridge, and attending secret meetings in hidden spaces on the ship. An opening date wasn't given, but we hear bookings begin soon.

Epcot's Epic Transformation Will Bring Sweeping Change to Future World

      8/20
The details of Epcot's massive overhaul took center stage both at the Disney Parks pavilion at the Expo and during the panel itself. Chapek promised fans that the ambitious transformation would make Epcot "more Disney, more family, more timeless, and more relevant."

The reimagined "Epcot: The Magic of Possibility" will be divided into four "neighborhoods." Piggybacking on the World Showcase moniker, which will remain, Future World will become three distinct areas: World Nature, World Discovery, and World Celebration.

A new nighttime spectacular, Epcot Forever, which celebrates Epcot's past, present and future, will temporarily close out evenings at the park before a new permanent show, the largest in Disney parks history. The new show, Harmonious, includes a moving original musical anthem for Epcot, composed by Pinar Toprak, and debuts in 2020.

World Showcase: A Practically Perfect Announcement for the UK Pavillion

      9/20
Chapek called serious star power to the stage to help him deliver some totally unexpected World Showcase news. The legendary Dick Van Dyke followed a troupe of dancing chimney sweepers to usher in the announcement that the United Kingdom pavilion will become home to the first-ever Mary Poppins attraction. Cherry-Tree Lane will become a new neighborhood within the pavilion. Just past Admiral Boom's home, guests will enter the Banks home at number 17 for a memorable adventure.

Food, Film and Fun in France

      10/20
The France pavilion is getting a number of major updates, none of which are breaking news, but are exciting nonetheless. Remy's Ratatouille Adventure will shrink guests to the size of a rat as they race through Gusteau's kitchen. Over in the theater, in addition to the beloved Impressions de France, a new Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along will debut in January 2020. A new dining offering is also headed to the table: Le Creperie de Paris, courtesy of the team behind Chefs de France, will bring new table- and quick-service options to the pavilion.

World Celebration: Spaceship Earth Will Remain Epcot's Classic Centerpiece - With Some Substantial Updates

      11/20
Diehard fans of classic Future World have been nervously awaiting these announcements. The good news is we didn't get any of the news we feared, like the razing of beloved attractions like Living With the Land and Journey Into Imagination with Figment. Spaceship Earth is receiving some significant changes, but Chapek assured fans that the ride will still include many of the same scenes we know and love. The major shift is instead of centering on inventions and technology, the ride will focus on storytelling, with riders being guided by a magical guide, "the story light."

Upon exiting the attraction, guests will find themselves alongside a new statue of Walt Disney at Dreamer's Point, where they will enjoy sweeping views of World Showcase. Other new features at World Celebration will include gardens, a wishing tree that comes to life, a story fountain, and a new pavilion for live events that will include an elevated park offering impressive vistas of the park and nighttime spectaculars.

World Discovery: Guardians of the Galaxy, Dining in Space, and Play Like Never Before

      12/20
World Discovery will be home to some of Epcot's most exciting new dining, activities, and arguably its most anticipated attraction. With a name finally revealed, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind takes riders on board a Nova ship to travel to Xandar and back on an innovative rotating coaster that will feature the first-ever reverse launch into space.

The Mission Space pavilion is being expanded to include a new space-themed restaurant, Space 220, that takes guests 220 miles above the earth to dine while admiring vistas of the earth both day and night.

And finally, some of the interactive activities that will be the hallmark of the new Play Pavilion have been revealed: guests can hone their fashion skills as they help Edna Mode purge bad style from the earth, have a water balloon fight with the DuckTales gang, and meet and play with real and virtual Disney friends like Wreck-It Ralph.

World Nature Brings a New Moana Attraction

      13/20
Previously announced on Thursday, Moana: Journey of Water is an exploration trail that will let guests play with "magical, living water," similar to the way Moana engages with the ocean in the film. This interactive exhibit will teach lessons about the importance of the natural water cycle.

Disney Cruise Line's Fifth New Ship Has a Name

      14/20
With three new ships under construction, fans hoped to learn more about what we can expect to find onboard. However, only minimal details were shared about the line's fifth new ship, which will be christened "Disney Wish." The ship will feature a three-story fairy-tale-inspired atrium with Rapunzel now named as the stern character. The Disney Wish will begin sailing in January 2022.

A New Port of Call Gets the Disney Treatment

      15/20
We've been hearing chatterings about Lighthouse Point for a while now, but today it was confirmed that development of this second port of call, Disney's answer to the demand for more port experiences similar to those offered by the much-beloved Castaway Cay, is full steam ahead on the Bahamian island of Eleuthra.

Perhaps the most exciting part of this announcement was the news that famed Walt Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde, who has previously helmed the creation of Disney's Animal Kingdom park and Animal Kingdom Lodge, as well as Disney's Hawaii resort, Aulani, A Resort & Spa, has the reins on this project. Rohde took the stage and promised guests a "seaside adventure camp" that would tread very lightly on the natural beauty of the place and would celebrate the Bahamian cultural tradition of food, music, storytelling, and dance.

Reflections: A Disney Lakeside Lodge Will Be One of the Most Unique Resorts Ever Built

      16/20
Disney's newest hotel project on the shore of Bay Lake is a reimagined classic country lodge drawing its inspiration from nature. Unique accommodations within the resort will include A-frame houses and treehouse suites and the fixtures, furnishings and artwork throughout will all be inspired by Disney films centered around nature.

Reflections will also be home to a new table-service restaurant as the shore of Bay Lake is transformed into the bayou for a 'Princess and the Frog'-inspired dining experience.

'Magic Happens' Daytime Spectacular Is coming to Disneyland Park

      17/20
A new parade will be making its way right down the middle of Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park this spring. Featuring new costumes, floats, a catchy musical score and new theme song by created in partnership with Todrick Hall, the parade will be led by Mickey and the gang and celebrates Disney's animated characters and stories, both classic and new, including Sleeping Beauty, Moana, and Coco.

Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway Is Well on Its Way

      18/20
The first-ever Mickey Mouse-themed ride is coming to both Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disneyland's Toontown. This family-friendly attraction takes guests on a colorful journey through the zany world of Disney Channel's Mickey Mouse Shorts. A first look at concept art for the exterior of the attraction planned at Disneyland shows the ride taking place within the El Capitoon theater and will be set in Mickey and Minnie's Perfect Picnic short. The attraction is set to open at Disney's Hollywood Studios next year and at Disneyland in 2022.

Updates to International Parks Continue Incorporating Animation and Characters

      19/20
Shanghai Disney Resort is getting a Zootopia-themed land. The park's eighth themed land will place guests within a mammalian metropolis, filled with entertainment, dining, merchandise, and a new major attraction, all inspired by the 2016 film, which was hugely successful in China.

Hong Kong Disneyland is also getting some updates, include the expansion and transformation of its castle to become a more spectacular focal point. The castle, which will be called the "Castle of Magical Dreams," takes its cues from not one Disney princess, but 13, with inspiration coming from elements like Snow White's apple and Cinderella's coach. An immersive Frozen-themed land is also coming to Hong Kong Disneyland, recreating the kingdom of Arendelle and featuring two attractions, Frozen Ever After and a new coaster: Wandering Oaken's Sliding Sleighs.

A Disney/Cirque du Soleil Mashup is Coming to Disney Springs

      20/20
Cirque du Soleil and Disney are joining forces to create a new show that combines Disney storytelling with acrobatic artistry in a celebration of Disney animation, music, and characters. The development of the show, which will be performed at Walt Disney World's Disney Springs, has relied on substantial input from Disney animators, particularly veteran Eric Goldberg.

The show tells the story of a young girl, the daughter of an animator, who goes on a journey of self-discovery in the world of animation. The show will feature new animation sequences with animated characters interacting with live performers and will introduce new original Cirque du Soleil music that incorporates iconic Disney melodies. Preview begins March 20, 2020, with the world premiere taking place on April 17, 2020.
