As
it proceeds with a potential merger with Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines is
still conducting the business of flying.
To
that end, Alaska will add nonstop service from Portland
to Atlanta.
The
new service is scheduled to start in the fall. It will be a daily flight slated
to begin on October 1 and fly year-round.
"For
more than 20 years, we've been the largest carrier in?Portland ¨C one of our key West Coast gateways,"
said Kirsten Amrine, vice president of revenue management and network planning
for Alaska Airlines. "We're always looking for ways to connect the Rose
City to other destinations across our network.?
"We
believe our flights to Atlanta will be a popular
addition for our guests heading to the South," Amrine
continued.?
Alaska
Airlines will now serve 54 destinations from Portland.
Last
week, Hawaiian Airlines shareholders agreed
to the acquisition of the carrier by Alaska Airlines, but it remains to be
seen whether government regulators will approve the deal.?
Last
month, a federal judge in Boston blocked
the deal between JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines. Some think this deal
between Alaska and Hawaiian could be considered another challenge to antitrust
law.
