      Delicious Destinations

      1/26
Alpha Travel Insurance recently analyzed the number of Michelin star and fine dining restaurants in major cities across the globe to determine which destinations are the best for gourmet dining and which city is most worthy of the title of fine dining capital of the world. The results may surprise you.

      Tokyo, Japan

      2/26
Tokyo ranks first in both total number of Michelin star restaurants and total number of fine dining restaurants with 229 and 1,758, respectively. Plus, nearly a dozen of those are three-Michelin starred restaurants.

      Paris, France

      3/26
Paris (113 Michelin star restaurants) boasts the most Michelin stars per square mile of any city Alpha Travel Insurance analyzed at 2.78. For perspective, only four cities can say they have more than one Michelin star restaurant per square mile.

      Osaka, Japan

      4/26
It's safe to say Japan takes the gourmet restaurant crown with Osaka joining Tokyo in the top three cities worldwide for the most Michelin star restaurants with 99 total.

      London, England

      5/26
London's 0.12 Michelin star restaurants per square mile is the lowest of any city in the top five. Nonetheless, the U.K. capital boasts 73 total and more fine dining restaurants than New York and San Francisco combined. As if you needed another reason to visit.

      New York, New York

      6/26
The Big Apple has long been recognized as a foodie favorite and Alpha Travel Insurance's research backs that up. New York ranks fifth worldwide with 71 Michelin stars and nearly 530 fine dining restaurants to choose from.

      Hong Kong

      7/26
Hong Kong ranks fifth in terms of most fine dining restaurants with a whopping 473. What's more, 63 of those have earned the coveted Michelin status.

      Singapore

      8/26
The Asian city-state of Singapore gives Hong Kong a run for its money with 39 Michelin star restaurants and 328 total fine dining establishments.

      Shanghai, China

      9/26
Similarly to Singapore, Shanghai is chock-full of fine dining establishments. However, Michelin star eateries aren't always so easy to find, with the city possessing just 0.01 per square mile, the lowest of any destination in the top 25.

      San Francisco, California

      10/26
San Francisco is closing in on three dozen Michelin star restaurants. With 34 total, it ranks fifth in terms of most per square mile with 0.73.

      Barcelona, Spain

      11/26
With an impressive 0.64 Michelin star restaurants per square mile, visitors don't have to search far and wide to find a memorable meal in Barcelona.

      Brussels, Belgium

      12/26
Don't sleep on Brussels when it comes to diverse gourmet offerings. After all, the Belgian capital city is tied for 10th around the world with 25 Michelin star restaurants or 0.40 per square mile.

      Amsterdam, Netherlands

      13/26
Remarkably, Amsterdam is home to 25 Michelin star restaurants despite having just 114 fine dining restaurants in all, according to Alpha Travel Insurance's research.

      Seoul, South Korea

      14/26
Elsewhere in Asia, the South Korean capital checks in with an eyebrow-raising 257 fine dining restaurants, 24 of which have earned Michelin star status.

      Chicago, Illinois

      15/26
Chicago has a whole lot more to offer than just mouthwatering deep dish pizza. In fact, it's one of only 15 cities to feature more than 20 Michelin star restaurants.

      Rome, Italy

      16/26
Italy is renowned for its delectable cuisine and it's no surprise Rome is the best place to begin your culinary journey of this sought-after European destination. After all, it's home to 21 Michelin star restaurants and almost 300 fine dining establishments overall.

      Berlin, Germany

      17/26
Berlin's 20 Michelin star restaurants account for nearly 5 percent of Europe's 415 overall. No other continent has more.

      Milan, Italy

      18/26
Milan ties Berlin with 20 Michelin star establishments. However, it's home to nearly 130 more fine dining restaurants than the German capital and boasts 0.28 Michelin star restaurants per square mile.

      Lyon, France

      19/26
Lyon ranks fourth with 1.03 Michelin star restaurants per square mile so finding something creatively delicious in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes capital shouldn't be much of a challenge.

      Madrid, Spain

      20/26
The Spanish capital is undoubtedly a foodie haven and it holds its own when stacked up against Europe's other tasty hotspots, featuring 340-plus fine dining stops and 17 Michelin star restaurants.

      Bangkok, Thailand

      21/26
Fine dining restaurants are plentiful in Bangkok as the city features a total of 369. Michelin star establishments are slightly harder to come by, however, as the Thai capital known for its iconic shrines and bustling street life is home to just 17.

      Copenhagen, Denmark

      22/26
Despite possessing only 111 fine dining restaurants total, Copenhagen ranks seventh in terms of the most Michelin star restaurants per square mile with 0.44. That's higher than Tokyo, New York and London.

      Washington, DC

      23/26
Washington, D.C. is one of only four American cities to rank in the top 25 worldwide for gourmet dining. The nation's capital is home to 15 Michelin star restaurants and nearly 120 fine dining options in all.

      Vienna, Austria

      24/26
Vienna's 0.09 Michelin star restaurants per square mile might not be all that impressive of a mark yet the Austrian capital can still do plenty of bragging as it offers 14 overall.

      Zurich, Switzerland

      25/26
There are just over a dozen Michelin star restaurants to choose from in Switzerland's largest city but still more than 130 fine dining venues in all.

      Geneva, Switzerland

      26/26
Only Paris features more Michelin star restaurants per square mile than Geneva, which checks in at an impressive 2.28. That's nearly twice that of third-place Osaka.
