      Memorial Day is a holiday set aside to remember those members of the armed forces who died serving their country. There are countless places where Americans can go to pay their respects Memorial Day Weekend and year-round, including these famous landmarks.

      Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia

      Established during the American Civil War, Virginia's Arlington National Cemetery is home to hundreds of thousands of grave sites belonging to fallen soldiers. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier-a monument dedicated to U.S. service members who have died without their remains being identified-is located within the cemetery.       National Mall, Washington, DC

      Just across the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., the National Mall is home to the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. All are within a short walking distance from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.       National Memorial Arch, King of Prussia, Pennsylvania

      Located outside of Philadelphia in Valley Forge National Historical Park, the National Memorial Arch commemorates the arrival of General George Washington and the Continental Army at Valley Forge, where thousands of American soldiers died from starvation, disease and other ailments during the winter of 1777-78.

      Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument, New York

      This historical landmark is located in Fort Greene Park in New York City's Brooklyn borough and remembers the more than 11,500 American prisoners of war who perished during captivity aboard more than a dozen British prison ships during the American Revolutionary War. Some POW remains are buried beneath the monument's base.

      USS Arizona Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii

      The USS Arizona Memorial at Honolulu's Pearl Harbor is part of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument and marks the final resting place of a majority of the sailors and Marines killed on the battleship during Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

      National WWII Museum, New Orleans

      The National WWII Museum in New Orleans will honor America's fallen heroes all weekend long, even offering free admission for service members. Events at the city's top tourist attraction will include a commemoration ceremony featuring families of the fallen and a national moment of silence.

      Minute Man National Historical Park, Massachusetts

      Minute Man National Historical Park in Massachusetts' Middlesex County preserves the legacy of the opening battle in the American Revolutionary War. Notable sites here include Concord's North Bridge and the five-mile Battle Road Trail between Lexington and Concord. The historic Wayside house will also reopen just in time for Memorial Day 2018.

      Bunker Hill Monument, Boston

      Liberty Memorial Tower, Kansas City, Missouri

      The 200-plus-foot-tall Liberty Memorial Tower is part of the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri and boasts an open-air observation deck that can be accessed by elevator and then 45 stairs. The Museum and Memorial are offering free admission to all veterans and active duty military personnel and half-price admission for the general public all Memorial Day Weekend long.
