Spirit Airlines is adding 10
new flights out of Boston-Logan, which can be looked at in two ways. It's a
step back toward profitability for the airline, which many thought might go
bankrupt in the wake of the ruling by the federal judge that blocked a merger
with JetBlue Airways.
Or its a hopeful nod toward
JetBlue and its huge presence in Boston.
Either way, its a good
thing.
Spirit is adding 10 more
flights out of Logan Airport, although some are amendments to existing flights,
and some
are new destinations.
All of this is scheduled to
happen in the spring.
The new destinations include
Norfolk, Virginia;?Charleston, South Carolina;
and Houston. It will also resume a daily flight to?Dallas.
More flights are also being
added to existing routes to Orlando, Miami, Fort Myers, Tampa, Myrtle Beach,
and San Juan. That brings Spirits tally to 14 nonstop destinations and 25
daily departures out of Boston.
Ironically, the federal
judge who blocked the merger with JetBlue and will hear the appeal from both
airlines in June resides in Boston.
"The odds were against
JetBlue from the beginning because Spirit is a budget airline, and while
JetBlue has low fares, it's not considered a budget airline," industry
analyst Henry Harteveldt told CBS MoneyWatch.
