10 Ways to Stay Fit on Vacation

      Avoid Vacation Hangover

      1/11
No one likes the day they get back from vacation. While the mental pull of wishing you were still away from it all might be powerful, the physical toll we put ourselves through on vacation can often leave us regretting the time we spent enjoying ourselves. These tips will allow you to balance the fun of your getaway with some peace of mind when you return.

      Plan Ahead!

      2/11
Start planning your workouts and your physical activity the moment you start planning your vacation. Make sure your hotel has a fitness center or pool. Check to see if you can be in a walkable area of the city. Pack your fitness clothes, a water bottle and any other gear you need. No excuses, right?

      Walk Don't Ride

      3/11
Over the years, most tourist areas have become remarkably more accessible. That's amazing for travelers with mobility issues, but it's also a copout for those of us just feeling a little bit lazy. Walking tours used to be the norm. Fall back in love with getting your steps in while taking in a little bit of history. Bonus points if you can find a running or biking tour as well!

      Hit the Grocery Store

      4/11
This fitness tip could double as a money-saving tip as well, and why not do both?! Find a grocery store near your destination and load up on portable snacks and other items you can keep in your room. Nuts, protein bars, fruits and veggies or yogurt are all good options.

      Order for Two (Meals)

      5/11
Even with a trip to the local grocery store, you're going to be spending time out at restaurants, and splurging a little is a good thing! You are on vacation, remember? Plan ahead, though and either share your meal with one of your companions or ask the waiter to box up half your meal from the start. Or, take it one step further and order tapas style for the table-loading up on healthy options as well as a few guilty pleasures.

      Stay Hydrated

      6/11
This is probably the biggest thing people forget on vacation. With a little extra movement, richer food and a little more alcohol than normal, people get dehydrated quickly and don't even realize it until it's far too late. Keep your body (and metabolism) running smooth and focus on water intake throughout your entire vacation-the extra bathroom stops are worth it!

      Bring Your Fitness Goals Along

      7/11
Most people plan a diet or fitness plan to end on the day before they leave for vacation. This is a recipe for failure if there ever was one! Been on a yoga or pilates kick? Try a session on the beach! Looking for a new bench press max? Hit it in the hotel gym! It's all the joy of a holiday without the guilt of giving up on your goals.

      Try a New Activity

      8/11
Listen, if I can do intense yoga on the beach, mountain climbing on volcanos, Ninja-inspired obstacle courses or parkour while on vacation, anyone can. Here's a good rule of thumb: Try new things you never would have imagined every place you go. This includes new foods, new activities and new ways to sweat.

      Eat Local

      9/11
Adventurous eaters love traveling because it allows them the ability to try regional cuisines not available back home. Do this, but don't just stick to comfort foods when trying local specialties! Hit up the farmer's market on the weekend and find some local produce. Or, go on a foodie tour around local fruit or veggie stands.

      Get Good Sleep

      10/11
Most of us (parents especially) will go-go-go on vacation and try to cram in as much "fun" as we can. Then, when the meltdowns start, we wonder why we don't have the energy to go hit the treadmill. Prioritize getting good sleep on your vacation. That might mean being choosy about your hotel room (or hotel location) if you're a light sleeper. It might even mean getting an extra room if your kids' sleep patterns aren't quite the same as yours.

      Move When Possible

      11/11
One can plan all of the healthy eating and activity possible on vacation and still end up sitting and waiting for long stretches on car rides or at the airport. Walk the concourse. Google micromovements you can do on the plane or in the car to keep muscles active. If you have a few minutes, spend them doing anything besides sitting and looking at your phone. Your body will thank you later.
