Who Will Sit on the Iron Throne?

      1/23
For some fans of HBO's Game of Thrones, it's not enough to just watch - they need to actually live it by visiting the film locations. Many tour operators are even creating specific Game of Thrones tours through Ireland, Croatia and other filming locations geared towards many of the noteworthy backdrops. CIE Tours in one such group, offering tours through Northern Ireland, Ireland and Iceland. But maybe you'd rather plan your own trip? Here are the can't miss destinations to incorporate on your Game of Thrones tour.

Doune Castle in Scotland - Winterfell

      2/23
Game of Thrones is famous for mashing bits and pieces of real-life places together, along with CGI to create the famous buildings for some of the iconic sets. One of the first places viewers are introduced to is Winterfell - a mix between Doune Castle in Scotland, Castle Ward in Northern Ireland and many embellishments thanks to technology.

Doune Castle is open to the public and known as having one of the 'best preserved great halls in Scotland'.

      Northern Ireland - Castle Black

      3/23
Along the A2, just south of Magheramorne, is a building off on the western side of the road-there sits Castle Black. It's a little off in the distance so it's easy to miss if you aren't looking for it - a full-fledged fort with a sheer wall as the backdrop. There's no place for cars or tour buses to pull off, but lucky for us our tour driver knew exactly what was up ahead. He slowed down and told us to get our cameras ready. Hopefully this location will open up to the public once filming has ended.

Mdina in Malta - King's Landing

      4/23
King's Landing was one place that changed locations between seasons. In Season One, many filming locations were in Malta. But later on, they moved to Croatia. Mdina was used for multiple scenes to represent King's Landing. From the entrance of the city - which was used as one of the entrances to King's Landing where Catelyn and Ned Stark say their final farewells - to walking around Mesquita Square - which was used as the courtyard outside Lord Baelish's brothel - the whole city is reminiscent of King's Landing.

San Anton Gardens in Attard, Malta - The Red Keep's Gardens

      5/23
Not much was added to San Anton Gardens for filming. It's easy to imagine Ned Stark strolling into the gardens to talk to Lord Baelish about what the former Hand of the King was up to, or when he confronted Cersei Lannister about her children.

The San Anton Palace and Gardens is actually the home for the current President of Malta.

Lovrijenac Castle in Dubrovnik - The Red Keep

      6/23
In season two of Game of Thrones, the filming location for King's Landing changed from Malta to Croatia. Lovrijenac Castle now serves as the set for The Red Keep and Dubrovnik serves as the city of King's Landing. The bay in front of Lovrijenac Castle is the same bay used for the Battle of the Blackwater.

Guests can visit Lovrijenac Castle, and they may even see some sword fights. But instead of a Game of Thrones theme, the castle has more recently served as a Shakespeare playhouse with shows including 'Hamlet'.

      Dubrovnik, Croatia - King's Landing

      7/23
Throughout the show - well at least after the first season - sweeping scenes of King's Landing can be seen. The iconic red-tiled roofs and Mediterranean coastline of Dubrovnik are easy enough to interchange with George R.R. Martin's fictional city. Walk around to the south side of Gundulic Square in Dubrovnik, and visitors will see the staircase where Cersei makes her Walk of Atonement/Shame.

Beautiful, filled with Game of Throne's filming locations and tons of history, Dubrovnik truly is a medieval city rising from the sea.

Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland - The King's Road

      8/23
Although traffic is now banned from traveling through the famous Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland, visitors can still stop and make the journey by foot. The trees are more than 200 years old and unfortunately less than two-thirds of the original trees still stand.

      Ouarzazate, Morocco - Pentos

      9/23
Pentos shares its filming location with another well-known movie, Gladiator. Ouarzazate serves as the backdrop for both Pentos, where we first meet Daenerys Targaryen - an honored guest of llyrio Mopatis and Russell Crowe's Ancient Rome. Located off the beaten path of popular tourist destinations in Morocco, G Adventures offers a tour that incorporates stops at Morocco's Little Hollywood - perfect for those who want to visit the area.

Azure Window in Malta - Daenerys and Drago's Wedding

      10/23
A popular tourist destination well before Daenerys married Khal Drago, the Azure Window on the island of Gozo in Malta was a natural archway that stood ninety-two feet tall. Unfortunately the Azure Window collapsed in March 2017 due to natural corrosion. There have been rumors that the archway will be replaced with a steel structure for future guests to visit.

Larrybane Quarry in Northern Ireland - Renly's Camp

      11/23
Located near the famous Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge in Northern Ireland is Larrybane Quarry. Sharing a car park, visitors have the option of walking right towards the twenty-meter rope bridge that sways thirty meters above the rocks and sea below. Or they can turn left to walk along the coastline to Larrybane Quarry. An easy choice for those scared of heights, Larrybane Quarry was the set for Renly's Camp. It's here that Lady Brienne of Tarth first pledges her loyalty to King Renly.

Cushendun Caves in Northern Ireland - The Stormlands; Birth of the 'Shadow Baby'

      12/23
It's the first time viewers see the real power of the Red Lady - when she gives birth to the 'Shadow Baby' that makes his way into Renly Baratheon's camp and kills him in front of Catelyn Stark and Brienne of Tarth. Located along the coast in Northern Ireland are the Cushendun Caves where visitors can actually walk to the spot where Ser Davos Seaworth smuggles the Red Lady to perform her magic.

Ballintoy Harbour in Northern Ireland - Lordsport

      13/23
The Iron Islands are made of multiple islands, with Lordsport being the safe harbor for those who wish to enter Pyke. It is here that Theon Greyjoy first lands on his return to the Iron Islands with a message from Rob Stark, King of the North, for his father Lord Balon Greyjoy. Not much was changed during the filming to turn Ballintoy Harbour into Lordsport. Remove the bright orange floats, and you're transported to the Iron Islands.

Audley's Field and Castle in Northern Ireland - The Twins

      14/23
Although the inside of Audley's Castle is not open to the public, visitors can pass by the outside and walk along the grounds which were used in filming for Game of Thrones. The single tower was mirrored using CGI to become The Twins, famous for where The Red Wedding took place.

The Minceta Tower in Dubrovnik - Entrance to the House of the Undying; Warlocks of Qarth

      15/23
Dubrovnik wasn't only used to represent sites in King's Landing on the show. The Minceta Tower was used as the entrance to the House of the Undying in Qarth. Here Daenerys must enter to rescue her three baby dragons from the Warlocks of Qarth who stole them from her. She circles the building, not finding an entrance, but as soon as she is out of Jorah's sight, she is magically transported inside. Now visitors can get a glimpse of the same path Daenerys took around the tower as well as sweeping views of Dubrovnik - just don't lose sight of any of your travel companions.

Dimmuborgir in Iceland - Wildling Camp

      16/23
Dimmuborgir in Iceland is rugged, barren and beautiful. This area of irregular lava fields and volcanic caves serves as the Wildling Camp. This is where Ygritte takes her captive, Jon Snow and viewers first see the extent of Mance Rayder's army of Free Folk. Instead of having to camp like the Wildlings, make this a relaxing trip by traveling with Avanti Destinations on their new hot springs tour in Iceland.

Grjotagja Cave in Iceland - Jon and Ygritte's Love Nest

      17/23
Nearby the Wildling Camp is Lake Myvatn, and near this lake is Grjotagja, an intimate lava cave where Jon and Ygritte get cozy. Visitors can no longer bathe in the thermal hot spring, but they are welcome to feel the water and dip their toes in.

Real Alcazar Palace in Seville, Spain - Royal Palace of Dorne

      18/23
One of the most picturesque filming locations of the whole show is the Real Alcazar Palace in Seville, Spain. Used as the Royal Palace and Gardens of Dorne, even visitors who are not fans of the show will be awed by the architecture of ornate arches and intricate carvings. Relax by the gardens and plan the revenge on the Lannisters with Olenna Tyrell and Ellaria Sand.

      Essaouira in Morocco - Astapor

      19/23
Known for where wealthy merchants could buy their own armies of Unsullied, Astapor is where Daenerys first builds her own army - making a sneaky deal with the masters and freeing the warrior slaves. Fans can visit the real city of Essaouira in Morocco, considered one of ten best value destinations to go in 2018, but don't expect to buy your own army. Instead, visitors are greeted to a laid-back atmosphere and enchanting views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Ait Benhaddou in Morocco - Yunkai

      20/23
Ait Benhaddou in Morocco is part of Morocco's Little Hollywood. One of Morocco's UNESCO World Heritage sites, this fortified city is situated within the Atlas Mountains. The city is used as the setting of Yunkai in Game of Thrones - a slave city that was taken over by Daenerys on her path to Westeros.

Klis Fortress in Croatia - Meereen

      21/23
The city where Daenerys stays the longest during her conquest before traveling to Westeros, Meereen is where the Mother of Dragons tries her hand at ruling. Tyrion Lannister joins her as the Hand of the Queen, and Daenerys soundly defeats the Masters after their second siege of Meereen - gaining her armada in the process. Finally, she can return home to Westeros.

Klis Fortress was used during many of the shots of Meereen, with the most notable being the winding walkway outside the fortress. However, you won't find a giant pyramid here - or three dragons for that matter

The Roman Bridge in Cordoba, Spain - Long Bridge of Volantis

      22/23
Tyrion and Varys have fled King's Landing after the murder of Tywin Lannister and the conviction of Tyrion over the death of King Joffrey. They find themselves in Volantis on their way to meet the Queen Daenerys. It is here that they walk across the long bridge into the marketplace. Visitors can walk across this same bridge - the Roman Bridge - in Cordoba, Spain.

      Gaztelugatxe - Dragonstone

      23/23
Finally Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons makes her way to Westeros - landing in Dragonstone where she was born.

The small island of Gaztelugatxe in Spain serves as the locale for Dragonstone. And although there is no massive fortress situated on the island, there is the long bridge connecting it to the mainland on which Daenerys is first seen entering into Dragonstone.
