      Castles have a way of invoking mystery and imagination. Featured in many prominent fairytales, they're often a centerpiece for fantasy. These magical structures, along with the scenery that surrounds them, can transport you to a different place and time where you can live out your dreams of being a royal, Knight of the Roundtable or a key puzzle piece in Game of Thrones.

      Neuschwanstein Castle - Schwangau, Germany

      It's hard to create a list of fairytale castles without including the Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau, Germany, which inspired Disney's magical Sleeping Beauty Castle. Located in the beautiful Bavarian countryside, construction began in 1869 by King Ludwig II but, unfortunately, was not finished until after the king's death in 1886. While this beauty boasts an ornate two-story throne room, it is ironically missing the most important feature-an actual throne-since the king died before construction was complete. Due to its popularity among visitors, tickets should be reserved well in advance.

      Lindisfarne Castle - Northumberland, UK

      Ready to take a step back in time and explore the under-the-radar splendor of Northumberland? Overlooking the North Sea, Lindisfarne Castle is a 16th-century fortress projecting all the English Middle Age stereotypes. Although smaller than the majority of castles built around this time, Lindisfarne is steeped in history that includes playing host to Jacobite rebels and warding off Vikings, in addition to being used by King Henry VIII.

      Amber Palace - Amer, India

Amber Palace, sometimes called Amer Fort, in Amer, India is one of these places. Built in 1592 and constructed out of marble and red sandstone, the palace was once home to the Rajput Maharajas.

Boldt, former proprietor of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, built the castle for his wife, Louise. Now, visitors can tour the multiple buildings or even have their own enchanted wedding on the grounds.

      Corvin Castle - Hunedoara, Romania

Just grab some coconuts and it's almost like you can hear the horses galloping outside the building.

      Lovrijenac Castle - Dubrovnik, Croatia
