After safety and cost, punctuality might be the biggest factor travelers consider when choosing an airline.

OAG, a leading provider of digital flight information, intelligence and analytics, recently released its annual on-time performance (OTP) results for North America, shedding new light on how the world's largest airlines fared when it came to getting passengers to their destinations on schedule in 2023.

While air travel has seen improvements over the past year, not every carrier has been as reliable as customers would hope.

Here are the top 10 performing airlines in terms of OTP among the 20 largest globally.

      10. Aeromexico

      2/11
Mexico's flag carrier,?Aeromexico operated the fewest flights among the world's 20 largest carriers last year at 201,627. However, more than three out of four of those trips (76.61 percent) reached their destination on time.

      9. United Airlines

      3/11
As many as seven U.S. carriers rank among the 20 largest globally, including United Airlines, which ranks ninth overall and fourth-best among U.S. airlines with an on-time arrival percentage of 78.67 in 2023. The carrier will look to build on that mark as it gears up for a busy summer season.

      8. American Airlines

      4/11
Topping rival United with an on-time performance of 79.11 percent, American Airlines operated the most flights among the 20 largest global carriers, flying 1,998,376 trips in 2023.

      7. Alaska Airlines

      5/11
Alaska Airlines operated fewer than one-quarter of American's schedule (405,337) but ranks second among U.S. carriers in terms of on-time performance with a rate of 81.04 in 2023. Despite the stellar mark, the airline faces significant questions regarding its safety and reliability following a harrowing mid-flight incident to begin 2024.

      6. Japan Airlines

      6/11
One of three Asia Pacific airlines to make the top 10 for on-time performance in 2023, Japan Airlines recorded a rate of 81.38 on its 309,328 trips last year. Similarly to Alaska Airlines, Japan's flag carrier has been at the center of multiple high-profile safety incidents of late and recently named a former flight attendant as its first female president.

      5. All Nippon Airways

      7/11
Also based in Tokyo, All Nippon Airways operated nearly 65,000 more flights than Japan Airlines but still managed to produce a slightly higher on-time arrival percentage of 81.63.

      4. IndiGo

      8/11
India's largest airline, the low-cost IndiGo leads the way in the Asia Pacific market with an on-time performance of 82.17 percent despite operating twice as many flights¡ª661,818¡ªas the aforementioned Japanese carriers.

      3. Azul Airlines

      9/11
Sao Paulo, Brazil-based Azul Airlines saw 82.39 percent of its nearly 307,000 flights arrive on time last year, making it the second-highest-ranking Latin American carrier when it comes to punctuality.

      2. LATAM Airlines Group

      10/11
Latin America's largest airline company, which recently expanded its international seating capacity, has proven to be quite punctual of late, with 82.74 percent of its 513,172 flights reaching their destination on time in 2023.

      1. Delta Air Lines

      11/11
Delta Air Lines put together another impressive year in 2023, beating out the world's largest carriers in terms of on-time performance despite operating a whopping 1,635,526 flights. The carrier will look to build on its success in 2024 by enhancing the in-flight experience for first-class passengers.?
