One of the hottest destinations in the world seems to be Tulum, Mexico, and its new airport.?
The airport just opened up in December.?
And the airlines are keenly aware of the interest in the region. To that end, six North American Airlines, including Aeromexico, are offering direct flights from 11 cities to start as soon as March 28.?
Not bad for a city whose closest airport, until recently, was two hours away in Cancun?
So far, the airlines that have committed to flying to Tulum include: American, Delta, Jet Blue, Spirit, United and Aeromexico. Combined they will offer direct flights from Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando and two airports in New York City.?
More airlines and more cities are likely to join that list, especially if the success they are expecting comes to fruition over the spring and summer. There are connecting flights as well.?
American Airlines and Delta will be the first U.S.-based airlines to go as they will debut at the end of next month.?
The only drawback, if you could call it that, is that the Tulum International Airport is not actually in Tulum. The airport is located about 25 minutes south of the city, although that¡¯s still 90 minutes closer than driving all the way from Cancun. Many airports in major American cities are located in the suburbs. For instance, O¡¯Hare International Airport is located quite a bit away from the city center of Chicago.?
Still, transportation to the downtown hotels could get pricey.?
Some are expecting the new Maya Train to be an option later this summer.?
