      1/11
There are currently more than 1,100 UNESCO World Heritage Sites spanning nearly 170 countries around the world. But some are more iconic than others. The Latin America Travel Company recently analyzed the number of geotags at each UNESCO hotspot around the globe to determine which of these renowned sites of cultural, historical, religious and natural significance and interest are the most popular among world travelers on Instagram. The top 10 might surprise you.

      10. Cartagena, Colombia

      2/11
With just over 2.5 million geotagged Instagram posts, Cartagena is one of four South American sites in the top 10. Beyond the beautiful beaches, the port city's historic Old Town is a hit with tourists thanks to its colorful colonial architecture and charming cobblestone streets. UNESCO also reminds us that it's home to the "most extensive fortifications in South America."

      9. Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France

      3/11
Paris' iconic Notre Dame Cathedral remains temporarily closed following a devastating fire this past April but checks in at ninth on the list of the most popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites, according to Instagram. The medieval Catholic cathedral tops the Louvre and Eiffel Tower among the French capital's most visited sites, hosting as many as 12 million visitors each year.

      8. Lyon, France

      4/11
Elsewhere in France, the historic site of Lyon was geotagged in more than 3.3 million Instagram posts. UNESCO points out that it continues to "play a major role in Europe's political, cultural and economic development." Reflecting more than 2,000 years of history, the capital of France's Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region promises to remain a favorite among Instagrammers for years to come.

      7. Verona, Italy

      5/11
While Rome, Venice, Florence and Milan typically come to mind when you think popular tourist draws in Italy, the historic city of Verona is winning over social media users who love to capture its medieval old town. "Verona has preserved a remarkable number of monuments from antiquity, the medieval and Renaissance periods, and represents an outstanding example of a military stronghold," UNESCO states.

      6. Quito, Ecuador

      6/11
UNESCO says that Quito has the "best-preserved, least altered historic center in Latin America." Notable attractions such as the monasteries of San Francisco and Santo Domingo as well as the Church and Jesuit College of La Compania are all examples of the unique fusion of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and indigenous art known as the Baroque school of Quito.

      5. Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, Japan

      7/11
Japan's imperial capital from its foundation until the mid-19th century and a center of Japanese culture for well over a millennium, ancient Kyoto's historic monuments consist of as many as seventeen component parts. All but one-the castle of Nijo-jo-are religious establishments.

      4. Brasilia, Brazil

      8/11
Brazil's capital city stands out for its modern architecture and is a "landmark in the history of town planning," according to UNESCO. Founded as recently as 1960, Brasilia ranks fourth among the world's most popular UNESCO sites with 4,469,003 geotagged Instagram posts.

      3. Historic Center of Oporto, Portugal

      9/11
UNESCO describes the historic center of Oporto as an "outstanding urban landscape with a 2,000-year history." The Luiz I Bridge and Monastery of Serra do Pilar are among the top sites for tourists visiting Porto in 2019.

      2. Budapest, Hungary

      10/11
Budapest was geotagged in nearly twice as many Instagram posts as Porto's historic center, with travelers checking in more than 8.9 million times. "It is one of the world's outstanding urban landscapes and illustrates the great periods in the history of the Hungarian capital," UNESCO states on its website.

      1. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

      11/11
Rio de Janeiro is the most popular UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to Instagram, and it's not even close. This seaside city renowned for its beautiful beaches and lush mountain landscapes as well as the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue has been geotagged in well over 23.4 million Instagram posts.
