      Vegan and Vegetarian Globetrotting

      1/11
Finding satisfying and nutritious food to eat when you follow a vegan or vegetarian diet can be challenging enough while at home in a community you know well. But it's an effort that becomes even more difficult when on the road exploring unknown parts of the country or the world. With World Vegan Day quickly approaching, and nearly eight million U.S. adults identifying themselves as vegan or vegetarian, WalletHub has released a report identifying the top cities for those who follow a vegetable-centered diet.

To create its ranking, WalletHub compared 100 of the largest cities across 16 key indicators of vegan and vegetarian friendliness including such considerations as the share of restaurants serving meatless options and the number of salad shops per capita. Here's what they found.

      New York City

      2/11
Coming in at number one in the WalletHub list, New York City has the mostsalad shops (per square root of population), at 0.2510, which is 42.5 times more than in Laredo, Texas, the city with the fewest at 0.0059. New York also ranked well for having the second highest number of restaurants serving vegetarian options of all cities studied.

      Portland, Oregon

      3/11
The number two ranked city, according to WalletHub's survey is Portland. A Google search for vegetarian restaurants in the city turns up countless options. There's also a fair number of vegan restaurants easily located in the city.

      Orlando, Florida

      4/11
Orlando is among the top five cities in the country for juice and smoothie bars per capita, as well as number of vegan restaurants per capita. The city also earned second place for the most salad shops per capita. All that and it's home to a long list of amusement parks.

      Seattle, Washington

      5/11
Seattle gets high marks for having a serious number of farmers markets per capita. It came in third place for this offering, behind San Francisco and New York.

      San Francisco, California

      6/11
A progressive city, it should be no surprise that San Francisco has the most community-supported agriculture programs (per square root of population) at 0.0128, which is 18.3 times more than in Houston, the city with the fewest at 0.0007.

      Los Angeles, California

      7/11
A city filled with body-conscious entertainment-types, Los Angeles' appearance on this list is also not exactly shocking. What is somewhat more surprising is that the city came in this far down on WalletHub's list, beat out by such places as Orlando.

      Austin, Texas

      8/11
A state that made chicken-fried steak and good ol' barbecue famous, Austin's respectable ranking for vegetarians and vegans may be a bit unexpected. But by some accounts, vegetarians and vegans can still feel right at home in barbecue central, as there's a strong base of meat-free restaurants in Austin as well.

      Scottsdale, Arizona

      9/11
Scottsdale, Arizona has the highest share of restaurants serving vegetarian options, 33.44 percent, which is 16.8 times higher than in Laredo, Texas, the city with the lowest at 1.99 percent. The city also has the highest share of restaurants serving vegan options, 20.23 percent.

      San Diego, California

      10/11
San Diego has a diverse and growing vegan and vegetarian dining scene. The city also hosts countless farmers markets each week and there's hardly any shortage of the trendy juice and smoothie bars that health-conscious eaters adore.

      Las Vegas, Nevada

      11/11
Better known as Sin City, it seems Las Vegas also finds a way to cater to those who want some healthy options amid all the excess. The city came in at number three for the most juice and smoothie bars per capita. (Because it's no secret anymore that a healthy smoothie can help kick a hangover).
