      Where to Beat the Heat

      1/21
The summer season is typically when many travelers take long vacations to warm weather destinations. However, many times scorching hot temperatures, nagging humidity and other less than pleasant conditions can mar your experience during the middle of the year. Fortunately, there are plenty of destinations you can escape to in order to beat the summer heat.

      Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

      2/21
Rio de Janeiro's peak season runs from December to March but visitors will find moderate weather and are less likely to be impacted by rain from June to September. Check out the June Bonfire Festival or stick around to celebrate Brazil's Independence Day on September 7.

      Juneau, Alaska

      3/21
The days are long and sunshine is plentiful during the summer months in Juneau, Alaska so plan your visit between May and August. These months tend to be drier and the average high temperature is around 60 degrees.

      Edinburgh, Scotland

      4/21
Although it isn't the cheapest time to visit, the summertime is the most pleasant time to explore Edinburgh, Scotland as temperatures are comfortable and long, sunshine-filled days are celebrated with a variety of festivals and other exciting events.

      Cannon Beach, Oregon

      5/21
The high temperature for July in Cannon Beach, Oregon is just 65 degrees so you won't have to worry about sweating while you stroll this world-class stretch of coastline or the various trails through nearby Ecola State Park.

      Helsinki, Finland

      6/21
The Finnish capital and surrounding Scandinavia are celebrated for their proximity to the Arctic Circle and thus the Northern Lights. However, that same location means that the days go on almost forever here in the summer. Plus, Finnair is making it easier for Americans to access Helsinki.

      Mexico City, Mexico

      7/21
Temperatures are mild year-round in Mexico City and if you're not deterred by frequent rain showers the Mexican capital is an affordable destination during the summer months as many tourists tend to head home in May ahead of the rainy season, prompting hotels and other travel suppliers to offer excellent deals.

      Denver, Colorado

      8/21
The Mile High City is an underrated summer destination but the low humidity, mild temperatures and abundant sunshine make it a no-brainer if you're looking to escape the summer heat without leaving the mainland U.S.

      Maldonado, Uruguay

      9/21
While the average high temperature is 11 degrees cooler in August (60 degrees) than it is in April (71 degrees), Maldonado boasts comfortable temperatures that make sampling authentic Uruguayan wines in the rural village of Garzon that much more enjoyable.

      Highlands, North Carolina

      10/21
From May through September, the average high temperature in Highlands, North Carolina ranges from 71 to 79 degrees, so it's no wonder the mountain resort town's population increases six-fold in the summer.

      Stockholm, Sweden

      11/21
June through August is the hottest time to visit Stockholm in more ways than one. It's peak season and the temperatures are at their warmest. However, average highs in the upper 60s and low 70s mean visitors can tour the Swedish capital's 14 islands comfortably. Expect plenty of sunlight also with daylight stretching more than 18 hours a day in July.

      Halifax, Nova Scotia

      12/21
Nova Scotia can get awfully cold in the winter but its summer season is among the most pleasant anywhere north of the border. Take advantage of average high temperatures in the mid-70s with a trip to Halifax between May and August. This is the best time to tour the trendy port city's scenic waterfront and experience its beloved museums and parks.

      Olympic National Park, Washington

      13/21
Washington's Olympic National Park is open year-round but draws the biggest crowds during the summer when roads, facilities and campgrounds are open. Even in July, the average high temperature is in the low 60s so visitors can sleep outside and hike through the park without overheating.

      Ireland

      14/21
If you're visiting Ireland in the summer, anticipate plenty of long days. The additional hours of sunshine and mild temperatures this time of year mean you'll have more time to explore the country's renowned scenery and landmarks as well as sip on a refreshing Guinness.

      Ogunquit, Maine

      15/21
Southern Maine warms up just enough in the summer so that you can splash around in Perkins Cove and other beaches near Ogunquit and take in a live musical at the Ogunquit Playhouse without needing a fan or cooling mist.

      Oslo, Norway

      16/21
With an average temperature of 64 degrees, July is the hottest month in Oslo, Norway. That said, it's also the perfect time of year to tour the Open Air Museum or attend a rooftop concert at the Oslo Opera House.

      Brattleboro, Vermont

      17/21
This river town in southern Vermont is popular year-round but offers even more opportunities for fun when the weather warms up in the summer. Find a new trail to hike, tour one of Brattleboro's picturesque covered bridges or stop by the farmers' market.

      Reykjavik, Iceland

      18/21
Reykjavik sees almost 24 hours of daylight during the summer so there's no such thing as being in a rush. That's good news since there's so much to do, including whale watching, hiking and biking through the photogenic city.

      Milwaukee, Wisconsin

      19/21
Head to Milwaukee this summer to take part in the world's largest music festival without having to battle the oppressive heat. Summerfest spans a whopping 11 days in June and July, features hundreds of bands and hosts close to one million fans.

      Montreal, Quebec

      20/21
The summer months in Montreal are ideal for experiencing everything this millennial-friendly destination has to offer. Tour scenic nature parks, jam out at the International Jazz Festival or simply people watch on Rue St-Paul in the Old Montreal historic area.

      San Francisco, California

      21/21
Summer is typically a busy time for tourism in the Bay Area but average high temperatures are comfortable and hang around the high 60s. If you like it warmer, consider a September visit. There'll still be plenty of festivals celebrating everything from art to chocolate.
