      Wine Around the World

      1/16
Anyone who appreciates a good glass of wine will probably be able to tell you that Italy, France and California produce very good vino.

But what about Switzerland? Or Hungary? There are lots of underrated and up-and-coming wine destinations out there for traveling oenophiles to explore and the following are 15 of the best.

      England

      2/16
A side effect of rising global temperatures is the fact that swaths of southern England are now ideally suited for winemaking. Grapes are growing all over regions like Kent, Sussex and Hampshire, and you know things are trending up when fabled French Champagne producer Taittinger buys a vineyard in order to produce English Sparkling.

      Georgia

      3/16
This beautiful country in the heart of the Caucasus Mountains has been making wine for thousands of years. Many producers still use the ancient "qvevri method", which involves underground fermentation in giant clay jugs. The signature Georgian wine to sample is Saperavi-a full-bodied, inky red.

      Greece

      4/16
While most of its Mediterranean neighbors get lauded for their wine, Greece tends to get snubbed. That's a big mistake, as this ancient country has been making wine for centuries and is known today for producing several refreshing whites. Seek out a bottle of Assyrtiko to recreate the feeling of watching the sunset on Santorini.

      Romania

      5/16
Ravishing Romania sits at roughly the same latitude as France and the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains that stretch across this Eastern European country are well-suited for grape-growing. Two standouts are Cotnari, a sweet white and Feteasca Neagra, a characterful red.

      Portugal

      6/16
Portugal will forever be synonymous with port wine, but that's not all they produce. The romantic terraced vineyards of the idyllic Douro Valley are an absolute dream come true for wine lovers. Tasty red blends are the signature here and are best enjoyed at tasting rooms that overlook the meandering namesake river.

      Switzerland

      7/16
No, Swiss grapes aren't covered in snow all year. The sunny south-facing slopes surrounding Lake Geneva and the dry hills of Valais are both especially suited for growing wine. Petite Arvine is a refreshing white from Valais and since most of it isn't exported you'll need to visit this breathtaking nation to sample it for yourself.

      Lebanon

      8/16
Grapes have been grown In Lebanon for more than 5,000 years, making the country one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. Modern-day masters are making quality French-influenced varieties-all in the shadow of an ancient temple built to honor the Roman god of wine, Bacchus.

      Austria

      9/16
Austria is another Alpine country that has been steadily picking up a stellar reputation for its winemaking. The country has long been known for its crisp white wines, with semi-sweet Riesling and Gruner Veltliner being especially well-suited to the climate in and around Vienna.

      Hungary

      10/16
Hungary is home to several spectacular wine-producing regions, which might just be the most underrated in Europe. Start out by sampling Egri Bikaver-a bold red blend nicknamed "bull's blood"-around Eger before heading to Tokaji to sip their eponymous sweet white dessert wine.

      Ethiopia

      11/16
Everyone loves Ethiopian coffee, but this nation is also an emerging hotspot in the world of wine. In fact, a recent investment from a giant French producer has resulted in speculation that the nation could one day rival South Africa. At the moment, French-style wines are currently being produced alongside fruity, easy-drinking wines.

      Croatia

      12/16
This country on the Adriatic Sea is awash in good food and wine. From the hill towns of Istria to the islands of Dalmatia, countless varieties are produced here. Grasevina should be your go-to to get introduced to Croatian whites while berry-centric Plavac Mali is the most ubiquitous red offering.

      Macedonia

      13/16
Macedonia might not roll off the tongue when it comes to wine-producing nations, but one taste of local Vranec will have you wondering where it's been all your life. The grapes flourish around the River Vardar, producing Vranec with a rich red color and flavors of dried fruit and jam.

      Luxembourg

      14/16
Little Luxembourg shares a border with two big boys of the wine world: France and Germany. Turns out that they produce wines that can compete with either country's corked offerings. The Moselle Valley is home to many wineries producing really good Rieslings and a tremendous sparkling offering called Luxembourg Cr¨¦mant.

      Bulgaria

      15/16
At one point in the 1980s, Bulgaria was the world's fourth-largest wine producer. After the collapse of the Iron Curtain, their wine industry fell apart but it has recently experienced a renaissance. You will find many well known international varieties here in addition to local grape Melnik 55-the most famous red.

      Morocco

      16/16
You'd be forgiven for not knowing that there was some seriously good wine being made in Morocco. After all, it's all desert there, right? Nope-in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, you will find several wineries, producing mostly French varieties like Grenache and Syrah.
