      Aqueduct of Queretaro - Architecture and History

      Stroll the cobblestone streets while standing under the arches of the most visually expressive symbols of colonial Mexico in Queretaro, the aqueduct. It began supplying clean water to the city in this arid region of Mexico on October 17, 1738. Although no longer used an aqueduct, the structure remains in place and is well maintained for traffic, pedestrians and the thousands of tourists that pass by and under the 74 stone arches.

      Built between 1660 and 1698, the monastery the museum houses was the first in the city, built by Franciscans to evangelize the native populations here. The architecture is representative of the Franciscan style, with simple lines and decoration. The museum exhibits artifacts from the pre-Hispanic, colonial and post-Independence eras of this region's history.

      Church and Monastery of Santa Cruz

      Visit this 15th Century church and monastery located on Sangremal Hill. Over time, it's been completely restored, with its main attraction being a replica carved in stone of the Santa Cruz, which appeared in the sky on July 25th, 1531, according to the legend of Queretaro's foundation. You can also admire the beautiful altarpieces of the pink quarry that are baroque- and neoclassical-style. In the inside of the convent, there is a tree that grows cross-shaped thorns.

      Pena de Bernal - Hike Up One of the World's Largest Monoliths

      Take a trip to Pena de Bernal, a 433 m tall monolith, one of the tallest in the world. Just under 40 miles, or an hour drive, Pena de Bernal is located in San Sebastian Bernal. It is one of the most touristic sites near the capital of Queretaro and considered one of the 13 Wonders of Mexico.

      Slow travelers spending weeks at a time in Queretaro may want to travel to see the Monarch butterfly migration, which happens between December and March. The reserve is located about three hours south of Queretaro, but well worth the visit if voyagers have the time. Sanctuary of Rosario is the main sanctuary because of the huge concentration of butterflies that arrive in the Sierra Campanario, surrounded by beautiful forests of pines, oyamels and oaks.
