While there are many false rumors flying around about the
safety of travel in Mexico, there are some places U.S. travelers should avoid.
Parts of Sinaloa are listed as Level 4 "Do Not Travel" under a revamped U.S. State Department, however, Mazatlan is still completely safe for visitors. Colima is also on the Do Not Travel list but, like Sinaloa, not everywhere has been nixed. Beautiful seaside Manzanillo is still safe, according to the department.
Tamaulipas is located on the border between Mexico and the U.S. and is plagued with cartel violence and is, for obvious reasons, on the list of places Americans should avoid.
The state of Guerrero has had a history of violence and despite many of the Pacific beach destinations avoiding designations of Do Not Travel by the U.S. government, Guerrero's famous beach town of Acapulco has not received such an exemption.
Overall, it's important to remember that the typical U.S. traveler visiting Mexico's popular tourist destination will not be impacted by crime or violence.
