      Visit Mexico in 2019

      1/13
Mexico continues to be one of the most popular international destinations for American travelers. Whether it's the country's stunning beaches, resort hubs or cultural attractions, more U.S. visitors headed to Mexico in the last decade than ever before.

This guide will provide travelers with everything they need to know about visiting and traveling in the country, from finding the best adventures and cultural attractions to where to take your family.

3 Best Mexico Destinations for 2019

      2/13
Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende and Playa del Carmen are three destinations that will give travelers a peek inside Mexico's diverse culture in 2019. All are safe, unique and interesting in their own rights.

Mexico City is one of the busiest metropolises in the world, a hub for business travelers, an iconic destination for leisure travelers and, now, the centerpiece for the film "Roma," heralded as a cultural masterpiece.

San Miguel de Allende has been named the American Capital of Culture 2019 by the International Bureau of Cultural Capitals. The colonial-era city in Mexico's central highlands is known for its devotion to the arts, baroque Spanish architecture and lively cultural festivals.

Playa del Carmen highlights some of the best aspects of beach culture in Mexico with its bustling 5th Avenue full of shops, restaurants and nightlife and its small thoroughfares lined with boutique hotels and independent shops. It is also a jumping-off place to some of the country's most iconic attractions such as Tulum and Chichen Itza as well as Mexico's famous underground waterways and cenotes.

      5 Best Attractions in Mexico

      3/13
Whether someone is looking to give their Instagram feed a boost or desires to make a spiritual connection at an ancient cultural site, Mexico provides opportunities in abundance.

Tulum is one of the country's most accessible and sought-after archaeological attractions. Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, the popular destination has seen some of the highest rates of growth in visitation in the state of Quintana Roo.

Chichen Itza is another of the most popular archaeological ruins in the world and is located in Mexico's Yucatan state in the south of the country and easily accessible from the Mexican Riviera.

Coastal attractions also draw visitors in droves such as the iconic southern tip of Cabo San Lucas known as Land's End and the beautiful Playa Olas Altas on the coast of Mazatlan.

Puerto Morelos is one of Mexico's up-and-coming destinations in large part due to the draw of the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park, home to the second-largest barrier reef in the world, offering a glimpse of a magical underwater region.

      Must-See 2019 Events

      4/13
As Mexico rises to the top of world's most sought-after destinations for travel, world-class events are gaining prominence.

By far one of the country's biggest events for visitors is the annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration. In Mexico City, an annual parade draws more than 1 million spectators, and a variety of celebrations take place all around the country.

Carnaval is another annual event that draws visitors to a variety of regions within the country with colorful celebrations and parades. Veracruz, Cozumel, Ensenada, La Paz and Mazatlan all host lively events around from February 28 to March 5, 2019.

Mexico is a country that loves its festivals and almost every week of the year means a celebration, whether its food, music or founding anniversaries. In April, the Festival Internacional de Mariachi celebrates the best of mariachi music. In September, Guadalajara is home to the world's largest Mariachi festival. The Feria Nacional del Queso y el Vino 2019 honors the long traditions of wine and cheesemaking in the region of Tequisquiapan. In July, Bierfest Orizaba 2019 pays homage to the beer town with a three-day event.

Best Places to Stay for Families

      5/13
Destinations in Mexico are overwhelmingly welcoming to families and multigenerational groups. The welcoming culture means that families will feel at home in almost any destination in the country.

Coastal regions located in the country's resort hubs, such as Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and the Riviera Maya offer a number of all-inclusive resorts that cater to families with an abundance of included activities, dining and nightlife.

Best Places to Stay for Couples

      6/13
Just about all of Mexico's coastal regions offer secluded hideaways that are ideal for couples. Lesser-known are its abundance of colonial cities such as Puebla with its quaint zocalo (central square), pedestrian-friendly colonnades and romantic outdoor cafes.

Couples should also head to the seaside town of Loreto, which combines the colonial spirit of the country with sensational views of the ocean. The "Magical Town" is remote, scenic and made for lovers.

      Best Destinations for Group Travel

      7/13
Mexico City is by far the country's biggest business travel hub, but those looking to make the meeting more of a vacation can bring groups to the shores of Cancun, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, the Riviera Maya and Los Cabos where both major hotel brands and boutique properties offer a variety of options for all types of meetings and incentive groups, from large-scale arena-style venues to intimate and authentic spaces.

An increase in air connectivity and an abundance of hotel properties makes Cancun an ideal option for group and meeting travel planners.

      Best Foodie Destinations in Mexico

      8/13
When you think of food in Mexico, it's hard to pin down just one destination for great cuisine. That's because the culinary scene is so diverse.

Merida, Puebla, Baja California, Mexico City, Oaxaca City are just a few of the top destinations that travelers will want to hit to explore the best of mole, fish tacos, pozole, gorditas and more.

Coastal cities are havens for those seeking creative ceviches and fresh margaritas, however, the country's diverse culinary traditions mean that anywhere you go is sure to be a pleasure for the taste buds.

      Best Places for Solo Travel

      9/13
One of the most amazing aspects of traveling solo is the ability to gain a close cultural connection with the country in which you are traveling. Traveling solo in Mexico is safe due to the welcoming nature of its people and heading to its intimate, colonial cities is the best way to create a deep and meaningful experience.

The beach town of Sayulita is a sleepy beach town, Puerto Vallarta is a haven for expats and solo travelers and Mexico City is the ideal place to get lost in a busy metropolis.

      Best Places for Adventure Travel

      10/13
Mexico is a hub for adventure travel. Whether you are into scuba diving and swimming with whale sharks or ziplining through the jungle and trekking up peaks, there is seemingly no adrenaline junkies cannot undertake in the country.

Baja California, with its access to the Sea of Cortez is a hub of adventure where visitors can swim with whale sharks and sea lions on a year-round basis.

Chiapas continues to build on its adventure offerings in the interior of the country. Along the western coast of the country, the states of Colima and Jalisco are also capitalizing on their adventure travel options.

      Best Places for Sports Enthusiasts

      11/13
Sportfishing is one of the top draws for sports-enthusiasts traveling to Mexico. Los Cabos, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta offer year-round fishing opportunities and are recognized as the three top destinations to snag sailfish, billfish and Marlin.

Resorts are home to some of the best golf courses in the country and the world. The Four Seasons Punta Mita, El Camaleon Mayakoba, Palmilla, Vista Vallarta and the Riviera Maya Golf Club are recognized as some of the top places to play a round.

For fans of soccer (futbol) the three largest venues to take in a match in the country include Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey.

      Unique to Mexico

      12/13
Mexico is nearly three times the size of Texas, and the country's vast territory encompasses high mountain peaks, vast deserts, deep jungles and Caribbean and Pacific coastal waters. It may be the Latin American country most familiar to Americans, but there are many unique aspects that set it apart from both the U.S. and its southern neighbors. Its diversity of culture, cuisine and traditions are unrivaled in the region and its access to some of the world's most ancient Maya ruins gives visitors the chance to glimpse some of the world's most ancient civilizations.

      Top Places to Avoid

      13/13
While there are many false rumors flying around about the safety of travel in Mexico, there are some places U.S. travelers should avoid.

Parts of Sinaloa are listed as Level 4 "Do Not Travel" under a revamped U.S. State Department, however, Mazatlan is still completely safe for visitors. Colima is also on the Do Not Travel list but, like Sinaloa, not everywhere has been nixed. Beautiful seaside Manzanillo is still safe, according to the department.

Tamaulipas is located on the border between Mexico and the U.S. and is plagued with cartel violence and is, for obvious reasons, on the list of places Americans should avoid.

The state of Guerrero has had a history of violence and despite many of the Pacific beach destinations avoiding designations of Do Not Travel by the U.S. government, Guerrero's famous beach town of Acapulco has not received such an exemption.

Overall, it's important to remember that the typical U.S. traveler visiting Mexico's popular tourist destination will not be impacted by crime or violence.
