You Don't Want to Miss These Florida Road Trip Stops

      1/11
When it comes to road tripping in Florida, there are two obvious routes: The western gulf coast or the eastern Atlantic coast. We recently drove the latter, starting in Jacksonville and ending in Miami. Here are some ideas for where to stop along the way, in places like Jacksonville, the Space Coast, West Palm Beach, Miami and the Everglades.

      Boneyard Beach

      2/11
Boneyard Beach in Big Talbot Island State Park is a photographer's dream. It's a three-mile stretch of sand that's banked by rocky cliffs and dotted with driftwood trees, many laying flat in the sand and carved out by the water. Perfect for an afternoon walk and picnic, the beach is comparable to an elephant graveyard, littered with the skeletal remains of big trees.

      Jacksonville Beer Bus

      3/11
This is one part of the road trip where you won't want to drive. The Jacksonville Brewery Bus Tour, better known as the Jax Brew Bus, is a great way to explore Florida's lesser-known beverage scene: Craft beer. Move over rum-there are nearly 20 craft breweries in Jacksonville, including staples like Intuition Ale Works, Aardwolf Brewing Company and Green Room Brewing. A half-day tour will take you to a handful of Breweries and allow you to sip and sample on the way.

      Palms Fish Camp

      4/11
Stop for lunch and a slice of local life at Palms Fish Camp, where the seafood they serve comes right off the boats-either their own or from local fisherman-and the setting introduces you to the beauty of the Florida backwaters. Chill out on the waterfront deck, kick back with a local beer and try local oysters, fresh catch or Mayport shrimp, all caught in the waters surrounding the restaurant.

      Kingsley Plantation

      5/11
Located on the Timucuan Preserve, a visit to Kingsley Plantation offers both a historical and ecological look into Northern Florida during the 18th and 19th centuries and its plantation lifestyle. A tour of the grounds (including its houses and slave cabins) explains what life was like back then, passing on the stories of slavery and its connected industries-a dark, yet important, stop for those looking to experience something deeper.

      Kennedy Space Center

      6/11
The Kennedy Space Center is located on Florida's "Space Coast" just two hours south of Jacksonville. It's an active spaceport where the majority of NASA's major launches take place, but also partially open to the public for visitation and tours. You can take a bus tour behind the scenes to see the launch pads and building sites, experience a take-off simulator, eat lunch with an astronaut, learn what it's like to visit Mars and see many of the retired shuttles and suits of the past, such as the Space Shuttle Atlantis.

      Kayak to Peanut Island

      7/11
You can't hang out in Florida without getting out on some sort of boat. In this instance, a kayak will do. The 79-acre Peanut Island is located off West Palm Beach in the middle of the Intracoastal waterway, offering a relatively calm paddle out to its shores. The island was once the planned home of a peanut-oil plant, which never materialized, and is now open to the public for recreation. A favorite spot among locals, it has sandy beaches, walking paths and campsites to enjoy. For those that don't want to paddle, or who have camping gear in tow, there's also a shuttle boat.

      Warehouse District, West Palm Beach

      8/11
After your dive, head over to the budding Warehouse District in West Palm Beach for lunch and a drink. Grandview Public Market has more than ten local food vendors, set amongst an artsy inside-outside design. Steel Tie Spirits, a local distiller producing rum and vodka, along with local brewery Steam Horse Brew Co, have you covered for local beverages. Once known only for its storage facilities and industrial grit, today surf shops and local merchants are turning West Palm Beach's Warehouse District into a hidden-gem.

      Dive in West Palm Beach

      9/11
According to Jupiter Dive Center near West Palm Beach, the area has one of the largest sea turtle nesting populations in the nation, meaning divers are likely to encounter sea turtles whenever they dive, including loggerhead, hawksbill, green sea turtles, leatherbacks and the Kemps' Ridleys. Blue Heron Bridge at Phil Foster Park is great for beginners and seasoned divers alike, beloved for its ease of access, shallow waters (long dive time) and variety of small sea life including batfish, frogfish, spotted drums, blennies, nudibranchs, seahorses, arrow crabs, lobsters and octopuses.

      Sawgrass Fan Boat

      10/11
No trip through Florida is complete without a stop in the Everglades, and whether you've done one before or not, there's nothing quite like an airboat ride through the swamps. Sawgrass Recreation Park is less than an hour outside of Miami and offers daily tours, zipping you through the shallow water and tall grass to explore this unique ecosystem and spot gators, fish and birds.

      Wynwood Walls Tour

      11/11
The Wynwood neighborhood in Miami is the result of what happens when artists and other creatives take over an industrial area, adding flair and color where there was once just black and white grit. The Wynwood Walls celebrate the neighborhood's street art by showcasing the work of professional artists from all over the world, each bringing their own unique style. Take an official tour of this outdoor museum to learn more about how the neighborhood got started.
