Thanks to the so-called “White Lotus Effect”, Thailand is definitely having a moment, but those headed to the exotic Southeast Asian nation need to be aware that its entry protocols have just changed.

As of May 1, all international visitors to Thailand must complete a new digital arrival form known as the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), marking the end of the previous paper-based TM6 arrival card. The new system is part of the Thai government’s broader effort to modernize its immigration processes and streamline border entry procedures.?

The TDAC must be completed online within 72 hours before a traveler arrives in Thailand, whether visitors are entering the country by air, land or sea. The form is mandatory for all foreign travelers, regardless of whether they require a visa. The only exceptions are individuals transiting without passing through immigration and those using a “Border Pass” for designated crossings, visasnews.com reported.

The Thailand Immigration Bureau announced the change last month, saying, “This system, designed to replace the traditional paper-based arrival card, promises faster immigration processing, reduced paperwork and improved border security.

The application must be filled out entirely online. The TDAC form requires several key details, including personal information, travel plans, accommodation details, a health declaration and lastly validation. After being approved, the TDAC is delivered via email as a PDF file, which can be printed or saved on a mobile device, and must be presented to border authorities upon arrival.

To Obtain a Thailand Digital Arrival Card:

      • Visit the official website: Navigate to tdac.immigration.go.th and select “Arrival Card.”
      • Enter personal information: Fill in your name, date of birth, nationality, passport details and visa number if applicable.
      • Provide travel details: Include your date of arrival, mode of transportation, purpose of visit and address while in Thailand.
      • Submit your health declaration: Disclose countries visited within the 14 days prior to arrival.
      • Review your information: A summary page lets travelers check and edit their answers.
      • Provide an email address: The completed TDAC will be emailed in PDF format.
      • Submit the form: Accept the terms and finalize the process. The system will immediately generate your card.
      • Keep your TDAC handy: Bring a digital or printed copy to present at immigration checkpoints.

This updated system is one component of the broader overhaul of Thailand’s immigration framework, which also includes the rollout of electronic visas (e-Visas), and enhanced monitoring of inbound and outbound travel.

Alongside its digital upgrades, Thailand is considering a proposal to shorten visa-free stays from 60 days to 30 days for citizens of 93 countries that are currently exempt from visa requirements.

The suggestion, which remains under review, has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters argue it could help manage tourism more effectively and curb potential misuse, while critics warn it could hamper the country’s tourism rebound post-pandemic. No official decision has been made yet, but the Thai government is still reviewing the measure.
