Travelers who want to visit Hawaii will now have an even cheaper alternative as Southwest Airlines has finally opened sales on flights.
According to the carrier's official website, the service between Oakland, California, and Honolulu that launches March 17 is officially on sale for as low as $49 for one-way fares. Travelers should act quickly, as the lowest fares are expected to sell out.
When compared to Hawaiian Airlines, a one-way connecting flight on the same route on the same day would cost $218. Nonstop flights on the same route with Hawaiian will cost $275, making Southwest's introductory rate less than a quarter the price of its competition.
Southwest officials announced service from San Jose to Honolulu and Kahului will start in May.
In February, the Federal Aviation Administration approved the low-cost carrier's request to fly to the Hawaiian Islands. Just days later, Southwest started promoting Hawaii service from California on its website.
While the majority of specific routes are not yet available for purchase, the airline revealed it plans to offer nonstop service to Hawaii from key California hubs, including Oakland, San Diego, San Jose and Sacramento.
As for the likely destinations in Hawaii, Southwest officials said the carrier would serve Honolulu, Kahului, Kona and Lihue, in addition to providing interisland service.
