      Michoacan Travel Guide

Michoacan, west of Mexico City and lovingly referred to as the “Soul of Mexico”, is one of the most diverse regions in Mexico - and it shows. The state is filled with delicious food, wonderful architecture, and people with deep histories. It’s for these reasons that visiting here is so special.?

Besides walking along the main travel destinations and the state capital of Morelia, there are four ways to travel around Michoacan.?

      • Plane: If you’re short on time during your stay, you can use domestic and international airports to get from one destination to the next. Unfortunately, this option is expensive and removes a lot of the exploratory nature of traveling in Michoacan.?
      • Taxi: There are both local taxis and ride-share options available here. DIDI and Uber work in more populated areas and the local taxis are easy and reliable ways to get around suburbs or rural areas.?
      • Bus: There are buses available for longer-distance traveling, including luxury buses with TVs and snack bars. You’ll find these buses at most airports or major tourist destinations and they’re more affordable than flying.?
      • Car: There are a few car rental agencies, all concentrated around the airport. The roads are in good condition and navigating is easy. If you’re staying in Michoacan for a longer period of time, we’d recommend renting a car because it’s the most bang for your buck. It also gives you the time to explore Michoacan more spontaneously.?

      Important Things To Know

      Currency

Michoacan uses the Mexican Peso as currency. It’s recognized by the $ and Mex$ symbols.?

There are both banknotes and coins of the Mexican Peso and they’re divided into the following denominations:?

      • Banknotes: $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, and $1000.
      • Coins: 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2, $5, $10, and $20.?

      ?

Luckily, we noticed that many tourist destinations readily accept USD.?

      National Languages

The majority of Michoacan speak Spanish. But most people are bi- or multilingual, with an impressive knowledge of native and international languages.?

People at popular tourist destinations will understand basic English, but we’d recommend keeping a phrase book or translation app handy. This is especially important if you head away from the cities and bigger towns.?

      Climate And Weather

Michoacan has a warm climate with dips in the temperature toward the evening. This is great because it offers a respite from the heat.?

Winter, which is from December to February, tends to have clear skies, with February being the clearest month of the year. The weather is also still pleasant, even when the temperature drops at night.?

Summer is from June to August and can be quite hot, especially if there is no cloud cover. Luckily, this time of the year is usually a little overcast, with rain showers in the afternoon breaking the heat.???
