      Grenada Travel Guide

One of the most underrated gems of the Caribbean, Grenada is known as Spice Island for its dazzling array of nutmeg, cocoa, cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger, among other spices.?

This country, made up of three islands, is quite different from much of the Caribbean. It¡¯s a bit less glitzy and touristy, while still offering the tranquil island paradise of the region.?

When it comes to getting around Grenada, we recommend hiring a car. There are public buses, but they don¡¯t go all over the main island. They are good for short trips, but not if you are planning on staying for a while.

Taxis are another option, but they get very expensive very fast. So we like to hire a car from the airport. This is a cost-effective way to travel, as long as you don¡¯t mind driving on the left.?

An often overlooked island, Grenada is a haven of local Caribbean and West Indies culture tucked away in the southern edge of the Caribbean. This tropical paradise is indescribably beautiful, and a lot more untouched than much of the Caribbean.

      Important Things To Know

      Currency

The currency used in Grenada is the East Caribbean Dollar (EC). Most places in the country will accept U.S. dollars but will give change in EC.

It is recommended to carry around small denominations of cash to avoid hassles with change.?

      National Languages

English is the national language of Grenada, although some people do also speak Creole English, a legacy of the cultural diversity of the country.?

      Climate And Weather

Grenada, like most of the Caribbean, is generally considered to have a wet season and a dry season, rather than four distinct seasons.

The wet season is from June to early December, and there is also some risk of hurricanes during this season. The Caribbean lies within the Atlantic Hurricane Belt, putting it at higher risk of natural disasters.

However, Grenada is on the southernmost edge of the storm belt and has only experienced four major hurricanes in recent history, and it is one of the safest places in the Caribbean during this time.

In the wetter, warmer months the temperature ranges between 79 - 87¡ãF. Most people choose to visit during the cooler, drier months, from December to April, when the temperatures average about 75 - 84¡ãF.

      When To Visit Grenada

While the weather in Grenada is wonderful year-round, our favorite time to visit is in early December. This positions you at the end of the rainy season but just before the peak tourist season starts in January.

Most people choose winter because of the (slightly) cooler temperatures and drier climate, but we¡¯ve found December to be perfect.?

While Grenada is still a popular vacation spot, you won¡¯t see it getting as busy as the Bahamas, for example. So it¡¯s a nice escape from the crowds in the rest of the Caribbean.?

Something worth considering is that because of its location, there are very low chances of hurricanes, even during hurricane season. It is safer than most of the Caribbean during this time, but you¡¯ll still find major discounts on hotels.

      • St George's: The capital city of Grenada is a beautiful sight. Situated on a hillside made of volcanic rock, you can gaze up at the city from the beach or from historic Fort George. We always love looking at how quaint the red-roofed houses look.?
      • Grand Anse Beach: This two-mile stretch of beach is considered the best on the main island, and it¡¯s easy to see why. With pristine sand and sparkling waters, it truly does feel like paradise. You can get hotels within walking distance of the beach for the perfect island getaway.?
      • Petite Martinique: The smallest of the three main islands that make up Grenada, Petite Martinique makes for a great day trip. This tiny island has only around 900 permanent inhabitants and offers some amazing fishing and sailing spots.
